PART 5: The Flight Into the Clear Night

The grand Christmas dinner never happened.

Within twenty minutes, Sabrina had walked up the grand staircase, retrieved her luggage from the master suite, and called for a private car to take her to the airport.

As she crossed the foyer, she stopped before Tristan, pulled the five-carat diamond ring from her finger, and dropped it into his half-empty scotch glass with a quiet, hollow clink.

“You’re a coward, Tristan,” Sabrina said without raising her voice.

“You spent two years telling me your ex-wife was crazy because you couldn’t admit you were too small to be a father.”

She walked out the heavy front doors into the snow, leaving them wide open behind her.

Evelyn Holloway sat at the table, quietly weeping into her hands, while Richard stood by the window, staring out into the dark meadow where the Black Hawk waited.

“Grace,” Richard said, his voice cracked with age and regret.

“Let us establish a trust. An educational endowment for all four boys. Full private schooling, anything they need.”

I stood up from the table, smoothing the fabric of my emerald coat.

My sons rose with me in perfect unison, stepping to my side.

“No thank you, Richard,” I replied gently.

“The boys have their college funds already secured through our state education grants and my veteran benefit transfers.”

“They don’t need Holloway money. They never did.”

Tristan stepped out from behind the bar, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with the realization of the absolute catastrophe he had engineered.

“Grace… please,” Tristan pleaded, taking an unsteady step toward us.

“Let me talk to them. Just five minutes. They’re my sons.”

Mason looked at him, then looked up at me.

“Mom, Sergeant Hayes said they need to take off before the cloud deck drops below the ridge.”

I smiled down at my oldest boy, resting a warm hand on his shoulder.

“You’re right, Mason. Let’s not keep the crew waiting.”

We walked out of the great timber house, past the shattered ornaments of a family that had valued appearance over truth.

Tristan followed us onto the stone terrace, the freezing wind whipping through his thin sweater, but he didn’t dare step past the railing.

He stood there, barefoot on the cold stone, watching his four sons walk away across the snow without a single backward glance.

Sergeant Hayes saw us approaching and signaled the cockpit.

The twin turbines roared to life once more, their powerful wash sweeping the fresh snow away from the landing zone in wide, brilliant waves.

We climbed into the warm, illuminated cabin of the Black Hawk, snapping our harnesses into place.

As the helicopter lifted smoothly into the night sky, banking south toward the lights of Boise, the boys pressed their faces against the glass.

Below us, the grand Holloway estate shrank into a tiny, solitary speck of light trapped in the vast, freezing wilderness of the mountains.

Liam leaned against my arm, yawning softly as the steady vibration of the engines filled the cabin.

“Mom?” Asher asked through the headset intercom.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Did we do the right thing?”

I looked across the four matching faces—brave, whole, and completely untouched by the poison of that house.

“You showed them who you are,” I said, kissing the top of Asher’s dark head.

“And there is nothing in this world more powerful than that.”

The helicopter surged forward through the clear winter night, carrying us away from the ghosts of the past, back toward the warm, honest life we had built with our own hands.
