PART 3: The Descent into the Gathering

The snow crunched cleanly under my boots as I stepped onto the meadow.

Behind me, four identical little boys hopped down onto the packed crust in precise, orderly succession.

Mason took the lead, with Caleb, Asher, and Liam falling into line beside him without needing a word of instruction.

The Black Hawk’s turbines began to throttle down, the whistling whine fading into the crisp mountain silence as the snow settled around us.

Across the lawn, thirty guests on the terrace stood frozen in complete, uncomprehending bewilderment.

Tristan had taken three steps down the flagstone stairs, his cocktail glass held loosely in his left hand, a condescending smirk preparing to form on his lips.

He had clearly assumed I had arrived via some dramatic, desperate civilian charter to make a scene.

Then his eyes moved past my silhouette.

He saw Mason.

Then Caleb.

Then Asher.

Then Liam.

The glass slipped from Tristan’s fingers, shattering against the stone steps, spraying amber bourbon and ice cubes across the snow.

He didn’t look down at the mess.

The color drained from his face with terrifying, unnatural speed, leaving his skin the shade of bleached bone.

Every single boy had his jawline, his dark chestnut hair, his high cheekbones, and the unmistakable, deep-set hazel eyes that had belonged to the Holloway family for four generations.

They weren’t merely related to him; they were four living, breathing, identical mirrors of Tristan Holloway at eight years old.

Behind him, his mother, Evelyn Holloway, gasped so loudly that several guests turned toward her.

Evelyn’s hands flew to her throat, her eyes darting between the four boys as if she were looking at four ghosts who had stepped out of family portraits inside the manor.

“Tristan…” Sabrina murmured, her voice laced with confusion as she touched his tense arm. “Tristan, who are they?”

Tristan couldn’t speak.

His throat worked convulsively, but no sound emerged from his open mouth.

I walked calmly up the stone pathway, my sons flanking me with the quiet, effortless dignity of children who knew exactly who they were.

“Merry Christmas, Tristan,” I said, my voice clear and steady in the freezing mountain air.

The silence on the terrace was suffocating.

His father, Richard Holloway, stepped forward from the doorway, his silver hair neatly combed, his aristocratic composure cracking right down the center.

“Grace,” Richard breathed, looking down at the four boys. “What… what is the meaning of this?”

Caleb stepped forward half a pace, tilting his head with innocent curiosity.

“We’re the imaginary babies,” Caleb said plainly.

A collective shudder seemed to ripple through the assembled family members.

Several aunts exchanged wide-eyed glances, while Tristan’s younger brother, Gregory, choked on his drink near the outdoor fireplace.

Tristan took a trembling step forward, his eyes locked onto Mason’s face.

“You… you said one,” Tristan whispered, his voice cracked and hollow, stripped of every ounce of military authority.

“You told me there was a baby.”

“I told you I was pregnant, Tristan,” I replied, looking directly into his horrified eyes.

“You refused to open the medical records. You refused to come to the second appointment. You told your attorney that I was an emotional manipulator inventing a phantom child.”

“So when the doctor found four heartbeats three weeks later, I decided you had forfeited the right to know.”

Evelyn Holloway hurried down the steps, ignoring the shattered glass on the flags, her eyes brimming with sudden, frantic tears.

“Four?” she gasped, dropping to her knees in the snow right in front of Liam, her trembling hand reaching toward his cheek before she caught herself.

“Four boys? Tristan, how could you not know this? How could you keep our grandsons from us?”

Tristan turned violently toward his mother, his hands shaking at his sides.

“I thought she was lying, Mom! She was trying to stop the divorce!”

“I never asked you to stay after the first denial, Tristan,” I said coldly. “I signed every document your lawyer put in front of me within twenty-four hours.”

Sabrina stepped down the stairs, looking between Tristan’s frantic expression and the four boys whose parentage was beyond dispute.

“Tristan,” Sabrina asked, her voice dropping into an icy, dangerous register.

“You told me she was barren. You told me the marriage ended because she couldn’t give you a family.”

The lie lay exposed between them on the snow-covered flagstones, ugly, naked, and impossible to retract.
