After I completed officer training, my father never once came to see me.

I built an independent military career that they knew practically nothing about.

I served without seeking attention, taking charge of missions, logistics, and sailors whose lives rested on fast decisions.

Then an explosive device tore through our convoy transport overseas.

I came home with a reconstructed knee, a permanent limp, scars I rarely discussed, and a military disability pension that I never brought up.

My grandfather Vernon had left me his countryside farmhouse before he passed away.

Since 2013, I had personally paid every single property tax bill on that land through my military account, even while deployed overseas.

Now my parents were accusing me in public court of abandoning the property.
