PART 3: The Unraveling Lie

The backyard party had transformed into an open-air courtroom, and Preston was the lone defendant on trial.

Brielle took a step away from him, her hand dropping from her swollen stomach to clench at her side.

“Preston, answer me,” she demanded, the microphone on the nearby podium picking up the edge of her distress.

“You swore to me, on your mother’s life, that she was tested and that she was the reason you had to divorce.”

Cynthia rushed over, trying to place a soothing hand on Brielle’s trembling shoulder.

“Brielle, darling, please don’t get upset in your condition,” Cynthia pleaded, her voice tinged with rising panic.

“There must be an explanation, maybe modern treatments or donors—”

“There was no donor,” Nathan interrupted smoothly, stepping forward so that his presence commanded the entire lawn.

“Julian and Leo are my biological sons with Audrey, conceived naturally within six months of our wedding.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Several elderly aunts exchanged wide-eyed glances, while Preston’s closest business associates suddenly became very interested in their phones.

Preston’s throat bobbed as he tried to swallow his own humiliation.

“This is absurd,” Preston hissed, trying desperately to reconstruct his shattered composure.

“Audrey, you brought these kids here today just to humiliate me at my own child’s shower.”

“I didn’t bring them, Preston,” I replied calmly, adjusting Julian on my hip.

“Your mother begged me to come under false pretenses so you could deliver a rehearsed speech and make yourself look like a triumphant victim.”

“I came here to show grace, but you couldn’t resist throwing one final insult at a woman who did nothing but protect you for seven years.”

Brielle looked at Preston, then looked at me, her young face pale and stricken with doubt.

She had been sold a fairy tale by a charming, older executive who claimed he was wounded by an infertile first wife.

Now, the reality of the man she had married was unraveling before fifty guests.

“Where are the records, Preston?” Brielle asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

“What records?” Preston muttered, taking an involuntary step back toward the patio door.

“The fertility records from the reproductive clinic in Raleigh,” Brielle said, her eyes flashing with sudden realization.

“The ones you said were lost when the clinic moved offices three years ago.”

Preston’s eyes flickered with genuine, undisguised terror.

“Brielle, this isn’t the time or the place for this discussion,” he pleaded, glancing nervously at his guests.

“No, it is exactly the time,” Brielle snapped, tears of frustration welling in her eyes.

“You told me we didn’t need pre-conception testing for you because the issue in your first marriage was entirely on Audrey’s side.”

She turned on her heel and marched straight toward the French doors leading into the house.

“Brielle, stop!” Preston shouted, dropping his champagne glass onto the grass as he sprinted after her.

The French doors slammed shut behind them, the sound reverberating across the garden.

Through the glass, everyone on the patio could see the heated, frantic argument unfolding in the modern kitchen.

Cynthia stood frozen in the middle of the yard, looking at me with a mixture of shame, confusion, and deep-seated guilt.

“Audrey,” Cynthia whispered, taking a trembling step toward me.

“Did you… did you know something back then?”

I looked at the woman who had enabled her son’s narcissistic cruelty for a decade.

“I protected his pride for seven years, Cynthia,” I said softly.

“And today, he decided to destroy it himself.”
